I am glad to be sober. As many know from my previous story, I wasn't happy in the beginning. I am much happier now. Every day is a new experience for me. I have to say, it's all pretty new still. When I wake clean and sober day after day, I do not worry anymore, that today might be the day that my sobriety goes down the tubes.
I was about to leave for a dance on the weekend, when my friend said, "you going to be ok? You're not going to start drinking?" It is a legitimate question. I laughed it off rather flippantly, even though it is a very serious question. A couple of drinks in, I'm not out of the woods! Instead, I'd be in the fray of it, all over again. My stomach has a sinking feeling because I know that it's true and it would be so awful. "No, I'm not going to drink. That's one hundred percent preventable!" I laughed.
I saw a friend at the dance who'd been drinking there with some other friends. Today, I saw her at her work, I asked how she was doing. I asked her if she was hungover. No, she said, yesterday she was a little. Her friends all got hauled out of the dance later on by the Police.
I left the dance around midnight before any of the wild stuff started happening; For that I am grateful. For my sobriety; I am grateful.
There is plenty for me to do to keep myself out of trouble. I have meaningful work which I love. I find books, social media, videos, and music to keep me entertained.
Sometimes, life is good.
