Thirsty Thursday Guest Blog

Hi! Thanks to Lisa for the invitation to guest blog here today and congratulations on your sobriety, my new friend.

My name is Lucie and I’m a recovering addict/alcoholic who’s been clean for 28 years this month. One might think that someone who has been clean as long as I have may have figured out some mystery to having a lengthy sobriety. One would be wrong to think that. There really is no mystery. It’s one sober day followed by another followed by another... Well, you get the idea. It really is just as they say: one day at a time. And the key to getting through the days is just to live one moment at a time – experiencing what life brings us and creating what we can in those moments.

Everyone who arrives at Survivor: Sobriety Island comes with several pieces of baggage. Some of what’s packed in those bags in necessary. Some of it is not. When a sober person faces their new reality in what can seem like a suddenly strange world, support is crucial to learning what needs to be unpacked and when, while choosing what can be discarded. That is a lifelong process. The key, though, since none of us knows how long life will be, is to do our best in every moment.  Over time, the baggage lessens and freedom from the weight of it allows us to move on more freely.

No one is perfect and some days the best anyone can do is just to put one foot in front of the other. That has to be enough if that’s all we can give because if there’s one thing an addictive mind and a cunning ego thrive on, it’s negative emotions. And when you’re sober, the pull to escape reality during some of those tougher moments can be strong. But, it’s at times like those that the old clichés apply:

·         Keep it simple
·         This too shall pass
·         No emotion lasts forever
·         Find joy in simplicity
·         Be kind and compassionate to yourself and others
·         Reach out
·         Find a creative and purposeful outlet
·         Stay humble

Sobriety is simple. It just isn't always easy. But, with mindful daily reflection and gratitude, it can be and is very fulfilling.

All the best to you, Lisa, on your journey. May it be filled will adventures beyond your wildest dreams. But, most of all, may it be filled with love.
